The damage people do the ecosystem cannot be corrected with prayer. It does not matter what god one prays to. It does not matter how important the cause that led to the contribution to climate change. No prayer can be so sophisticated to undo such damages. There is no perfection of mysticism that will correct climate change. This is where the separation of spirituality and civility must begin. I spent years trying to reach God. I may have even succeeded. However, did that turn back the clock on climate change? No. If I learned anything from God is that in spite of my protestations, God does not overtly intercede in ways that would be most convenient, such as saving Earth from humanity’s lackluster ambitions and power-motives.
This should not be new to anyone, spiritual or not. That being said, it must be said, God will not be diving out of the sky to heal the planet. Neither will corporations, or governments, or the casual masses. That means only thing: change starts at the individual level. In the same way that I argue degrowth starts with the individual, so, too, does changing the type of behavior and lifestyles that contribute to the destruction of the Earth. None of this should need to be said. But what does need to be said, to the individual as well as the group, is that we are on our own. We are on our own.
